2009; situated on the man-made Tatsumi Port Island in the city of Iwatodai, Japan, Gekkoukan High School is a prestigious academy funded by the mysterious Kirijo Group. But things are not as they seem; every night at midnight begins a hidden hour known to those who experience it as ‘the Dark Hour’, and Gekkoukan High School reforms itself into a massive tower and becomes home to mysterious monsters dubbed Shadows. Ten years ago, the grounds of Gekkoukan High School were used as a testing grounds for experimentation on these strange creatures, with the initial intent of creating a time machine, led by the Kirijo group. However, the leader of this group of scientists went mad during the experimentation, and sought to bring about the end of the world by amassing a huge number of shadows and fusing them together. Though the experiment was foiled, a major change occurred from that day forth.
Every night at midnight since that instant, the tower called Tartarus builds itself up from the ground where Gekkoukan High now stands, serving as a place to release the Shadows into the surrounding city of Iwatodai. Most people are unaware of the Dark Hour, and are also incapable of entering it, but now reports are coming more and more about a mysterious affliction called ‘Apathy Syndrome’; an almost vegetative state in which a person can do nothing more than stand and groan, with no other physical symptoms. A direct result of the actions of Shadows during the Dark Hour.
But there are bigger problems than Apathy Syndrome in the world. From a realm mirroring ours, the Greek god Hades, sick of the mockeries made of him in the world of humans, has long plotted his vengeance against them. With the appearance of Tartarus in the Dark Hour, he now has the tool he requires to wreak vengeance on those who would dare to mock him. He seeks to plunge his own world into darkness and merge the two realms together, fusing the inhabitants of the human world with their alternate selves in order to have power in both. The resulting fusions would render most of humanity incapable of functioning, and likely bring civilization to its knees.
There are those capable of preventing this from happening. Humans who can experience the Dark Hour, and those who know of the other world. They call their other selves ‘Persona’, and are capable of calling them forth to aid in battle during the Dark Hour. Though unaware of Hades plans to merge the two worlds, this small group of people struggles on a frequent basis to prevent the Shadows from carrying out whatever plans they may be following, in addition to their struggles in normal day-to-day life. Turn back the clock on the events of Persona 3 to the beginning, and join in the fight to save the world… or bring about its downfall, in a place where lost dreams gather to be realized anew.
