Koromaru was just coming back from his earlier walk. He, everyday, would take this walk as if his master was still alive, walking beside him. Sometimes people stared at him, others ignored him while sometimes he would stop to allow people to pet him. He wouldn't bite, nor did he mind being stopped on his leisurely walk from time to time. Even if he waited for his master, he was usually alone.
It was nice to get the company every now and then. Koromaru entered the Shrine where, as usual, no one seemed to be around at. He wasn't surprised; it was an uncommon site to see others at the Shrine. He would know for he was always at the Shrine, waiting for his master to come home. The white dog paced himself slowly towards the Shrine.
He turned around and took his place, sitting down and stood up straight, looking at the outside of the shrine, as if waiting for someone. Koromaru would unrelentingly continue this and has continued this tradition everyday for the past six months. He wondered if he would get some company today as he waited for his master. His tail wagged slowly at the thought of it.

Kazaki was walking home from school, like any other day when he noticed the dog. It was small, with white fur, and seemed to be anxiously waiting for something or someone. He's been there every day, hasn't he? I wonder who he's waiting for... Kazaki paused, watching the shrine and the dog with a distant expression on his face. I'll bring him something tomorrow. It must get lonely waiting all alone. With a final glance at the dog, Kazaki kept walking.
The next day, he stopped by the shrine after school. As expected, the white dog was sitting there, waiting. Kazaki approached with a warm smile on his face as he took some food out of a bag. "Here," Kazaki said, holding out the food he had brought from school. "Are you hungry?" He seems friendly enough.
Still offering the food with his left hand, Kazaki moved to pet the dog with his right. "You're a good boy. I wonder what your name is..." Kazaki thought for a moment, then noticed the collar. "Koromaru? It's a good name. It suits you. I'm Kazaki."

Koromaru was in the same exact spot, if not a few marginal inches in difference, as he was day after day, waiting for his master. However, it wasn't his master that approached the shrine, but a student. Koromaru remembered him; he passed by. Koromaru tilted his head, wondering what the boy was doing here, but then he took out a bag of food.
His tail wagged softly. He was a little bit hungry. He was going to find something to eat before the boy came to him. "Bark!" he spoke, nodding his head slightly to indicate he was, in fact, hungry. Koromaru, though hungry, wouldn't bite the hand who feeds him as he took the bag gently and placed it in front of him as he started to eat.
His left ear flicked at being petted but was not undeterred from eating nor showed any sign of aggression. He didn't mind the petting, after all. At being asked what his name was, Koromaru lifted his head, showing his tag. The other caught sight of it as he also introduced himself. Koromaru barked again to show he understood the name and went back to eating.

Kazaki smiled down at Koromaru, a little surprised at the dog's responses. "You're a smart dog." Kazaki said while Koro finished the food he brought. Kazaki stayed at the shrine for about ten more minutes before bidding farewell and leaving.
The next day he came back, again with food. "Hey Koro-kun, I'm back. I brought you some more food, I figure that with the old priest gone not many people are looking after you anymore." As koromaru took the food, Kazaki sat down next to him, talking at- or perhaps to, given how intelligent this dog seemed- the small dog. "You're much easier to talk to, Koro-kun. I don't have to worry about messing up around you."
Kazaki stood up a few minutes later. "Would you like to go for a walk? You can't spend all your time in this temple after all."

Koromaru barked, clearly pleased that he was called smart. His new found friend stayed for him for just a little while before he returned to his home, he assumed. Koromaru was finished with his food by then, so he had nothing else to do but wait until the next day came. Koromaru shifted himself so he was lying on his chest, his tail wagging slowly as evening came.
The next day, Koromaru was slightly late for going on his walk, but he had a feeling that his new friend would come and visit again. Sure enough, the familiar boy from yesterday was back. Koromaru, who was still in his lying position, moved himself so he was sitting, barking at the arrival of the other. He tilted his head. Did someone tell him about the story? It didn't matter; he had food and Koromaru would gladly eat it.
Koromaru took the food once more, and started to eat s he spoke, flicking his right ear to show that he was still listening. After he finished the food, Koromaru looked up as Kazaki stood up and suggested a walk. Koromaru rose to his feet as well. "Bark!" A slight nod showed that Koromaru was ready for his walk, starting to lead the way outside the shrine and started to go his routine way.
